Intro to Intaglio Printmaking
Discover the beauty and precision of traditional intaglio printmaking! In this introductory class, you’ll learn the fundamentals of this centuries-old technique where images are incised into a printing plate and ink is pressed into paper to reveal richly detailed, expressive results. Intaglio printmaking is where you carve images into a plate, in our case recycled materials. To create a print, you fill these carved lines with ink, then press paper onto the plate. The paper picks up the ink from the carved areas, revealing your design. Make one of a kind prints using recycled materials to create your image.
Working step-by-step, you’ll explore basic etching, inking, and printing methods using a press, while experimenting with line, texture, and tone. No experience is necessary—just a willingness to roll up your sleeves and see what happens when metal, ink, and imagination meet. Tetra Pak printing as an accessible intaglio method using recycled packaging. Tetra Pak printing offers a simple yet versatile introduction to the intaglio printing process. By repurposing recycled food packaging, you can create unique intaglio printing plates with an immediate printable surface, unlike other collagraph materials.
All materials and tools are provided. You’ll leave class with your own small edition of prints and the skills to continue exploring intaglio on your own.
