Instructor: Gary Brown, Bent Willow Rod Company LLC
Learn the art of building a graphite fly rod from scratch. Students will be exposed to the hundreds of rod building components that are available, then learn how to choose components for the rod build they are planning. We’ll also go through the use of various tools, procedures and safety, all while learning the hands-on skills needed to build a fly rod.
This year students will be given the options of what weight of fly rod they wish to build. Students will have the option of choosing a weight of 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6, on a 2-piece graphite rod blank. The instructor will be available to help students select a weight that works best for their situation. Sign-ups will close on Monday October 20 to allow adequate time for ordering rod components.
Gary Brown has been building rods for over 40 years after learning the craft in a college fly fishing class. In an effort to save money while utilizing higher quality rods, Gary crafted many of the fly rods he currently uses. In 2016 he took his rod building to the next level by creating Bent Willow Rod Company LLC. A small rod building company house in the attic of his shop. He also started building a wide variety of rods for pan fish to sturgeon and dove deep into thread art, the practice of weaving thread into decorative patterns.
