In this class led by folklore scholar Tracey Kindall, students will explore the existence of the “otherworld” in stories throughout time and across cultures - Fairyland, the Celtic Otherworld, the Land of the Dead, enchanted forests, magical wells, traveling islands, underwater kingdoms, outer space, and the realms of the gods. Students will encounter diverse myths and folktales that feature these magical locales. There will also be an opportunity to explore a few modern pop culture takes on this ancient theme, as well as take a glance at the influence of current scientific thought on otherworld narratives (think multiverses and string theory). We will examine the portals that lead to these places, what happens in these other worlds, and the impact of these places on those who visit them, ultimately coming to ask “what do these stories reveal to us about the human encounter with mystery?”
