In this class, musicians will explore the process of learning and playing a melody by ear. Instructor Patrick Harren will guide students through the musical journey beginning with the miracle of musical memory and the importance of listening. Various electronic devices will be introduced that can aid in the learning process. Students will gradually make their way to learning a tune by ear, at a level best-suited to the individual player. Students will need to bring a musical instrument with them to class. As the course is melody-oriented, fiddles, mandolins, flutes, and other melody instruments will be best-suited. Guitarists may prefer to flat-pick. A small portable recording device with a playback feature that allows you to slow down the melody is also highly advised. The Olympus VN 541PC is a nice example and available online. Instructor Patrick Harren is an accomplished musician. He plays wooden flute for Irish music and harmonica for old-timey music. He is a 3-time winner of the diatonic division of the Yellow Pine harmonica contest, and is currently a member of the old-timey Boise band, the Hokum Hi Flyers, as well as the Irish band, the Giant Leprechauns. Patrick was a member of the Long String Valley Band back in the 80s and still plays regularly in Irish, Ol’ Timey, and Bluegrass sessions. $54  Registration Required
